What happened

James Howells was an IT worker in Newport, South Wales. In 2009, when the Bitcoin network was only months old and the protocol was running on CPUs, he mined 8,000 BTC using his personal laptop over the course of about a week. The mining experiment ended when his girlfriend complained that the fan noise was making the room too hot to sit in. He stopped mining, archived the keys, and forgot about them.

A few years later, in 2013, Howells was clearing out a drawer of old electronics during a move. There were two identical-looking hard drives in the drawer: one blank, one containing a wallet.dat file with the private keys to the 8,000 BTC he had mined four years earlier. He threw out the wrong drive.

By the time he realized the mistake, the drive had been transported to the Docksway landfill on the outskirts of Newport. At that point, bitcoin had passed $1,000 for the first time and his accidentally discarded drive was worth roughly $8 million. Today, depending on the market, the drive's contents are worth anywhere from $400 million to nearly a billion dollars.

Howells has spent the years since trying to get Newport City Council's permission to excavate. He has approached them with engineering firms, environmental consultants, and professional landfill-mining operators. He has offered the city a share of the recovered funds, ranging from millions to a dedicated trust for community projects. The council has consistently refused, citing environmental risk, the practical difficulty of locating a single hard drive in roughly 110,000 tonnes of compacted waste, and the legal complication that the drive — under UK waste law — became council property the moment it crossed the landfill gate.

In early 2025, the High Court of England and Wales rejected Howells's latest civil claim, affirming that the council was within its rights to refuse access. Reporting at the time indicated he intended to appeal. The drive remains where it has been since 2013: roughly 60 feet underground, in a Welsh landfill, in an unknown state of physical preservation.

Where it went wrong

Howells's loss is typically told as a story about throwing the wrong drive away. That's the proximate cause. But proximate causes are almost never the actual cause. The real story is that his entire keying material — every byte needed to spend 8,000 BTC — lived on exactly one physical object. Once you accept that architecture, eventually losing the physical object is inevitable. The only question is whether it happens by garbage truck, house fire, flood, theft, or grandchild.

All three failures compound. Even if Howells had labeled the drives ("DO NOT DISCARD — BITCOIN") and even if a second copy had existed on another drive, the absence of any independent share held off-site meant the failure mode was always going to be physical. Physical things, given a decade, get lost.

The "single device" problem

The early Bitcoin culture treated single-device custody as a virtue. A wallet on one machine, with no servers involved, with no third parties able to seize or freeze, was the point of the system. That ethos made sense politically and made sense for protocol design. It did not make sense as a personal architecture for assets you cared about.

The mistake was conflating "self-sovereign" with "single device." A properly self-sovereign setup is one where no third party can compel disclosure or seize the asset. It says nothing about how many independent shards of the keying material exist or where they live. You can be fully self-sovereign and still have your seed split across five geographically distinct locations using Shamir's Secret Sharing. The protocol does not care. Each of those is a James Howells scenario in miniature. One household event — a fire, a burglary, a flood, a determined toddler — and that slice of your digital life is gone. The chance of any one of those happening in a given year is small. The chance of any single one of them happening across the next thirty years is uncomfortably close to certain.

The drive is probably ruined anyway

The cruelest part of the Howells story is that even if the council relented tomorrow, even if excavators located the exact drive, the platters may not be recoverable. Modern hard drives are precision-engineered devices. Sealed platters can survive surprising environmental insults — drives pulled from Hurricane Katrina flooding were often recovered — but a decade of compaction under heavy machinery, leachate exposure, and methane buildup is a different test. Forensic data recovery operates on probabilities, not guarantees.

The lesson here is not that hardware is unreliable in some narrow technical sense. The lesson is that durability is a property of cryptographic architectures, not of physical objects.
